Why Their Work Lives Here

We’re drawn to Lebo’s work for its fusion of narrative, symbolism, and rhythm — qualities that echo the storytelling spirit of our collection. His Cuban heritage and Miami roots gave his art a layered cultural resonance, while his playful lines and luminous colors invite viewers into a world where imagination and meaning coexist. Owls, a recurring motif in his work, appear as guides and guardians — a symbol that resonates deeply with our own collection. Lebo’s art reminds us that creativity can be both playful and profound, carrying forward stories that connect cultures, families, and generations.

About

David “Lebo” Le Batard (1972–2023) was a Cuban‑American artist whose vibrant visual language blended cartooning, calligraphy, street art, and mythology into what he called Postmodern Cartoon Expressionism. Born in New York City to Cuban exile parents and raised in South Florida, Lebo’s work carried the dual influence of his heritage and Miami’s multicultural energy. His art spanned murals, prints, sculpture, and live painting, always infused with rhythm, spirituality, and storytelling. Among his most notable commissions was the exterior hull design for the Norwegian Getaway cruise ship (2014), a monumental floating canvas that brought his joyful, symbolic style to an international audience.
